New Delhi: The Government's move to take a Muslim census in the Army has been taken to the Supreme Court.

Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Gen R S Kadyan, has filed a Public Interest Litigation, challenging the decision. The Muslim census had rocked Parliament on Friday. While the BJP alleged that the government was playing votebank politics, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee rejected the Opposition's claims.

The petitioner urged the court to issue a directive to the Centre to keep the data collected so far in this regard as 'classified'.

The petition was filed before a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice S H Kapadia and Justice C K Thakker, which asked the petitioner's counsel to file the petition in the registry and get it numbered.

The petition is likely to come up for a hearing on Tuesday.
