KOLLAM: Shailesh Naik, secretary to the Union Earth Sciences Department, has said that the wireless sensor technology for detection of landslides developed by the Amrita University can be replicated in other landslide-prone areas of the country, including the Himalayan region. He was speaking at Amritapuri near here during the inauguration of the Amrita Wireless Network Centre the other day. He reviewed the landslide detection system installed at Munnar by the university. He urged the university to concentrate on work in areas of earth sciences such as monsoon modelling, earthquake modelling, mountain weather modelling, which have a great bearing on the country’s well-being.He said that such technologies will be of great importance to the country’s agriculture and economy.The North-East region often witnessed abrupt variations in weather. rendering helicopter flights quite unsafe. Early warning systems could be of great help in streamlining air transport, he said.
