New Delhi: India's Amandeep Singh (49kg) entered the finals of the 2011 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships at Incheon, South Korea, while Paramjeet Samota (91kg) and Balwinder Beniwal (64kg) had to be content with a bronze medal finish.
Amandeep, a 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist and bronze medallist in 2007 Asian championship, defeated Jinyong Jiang of China for a place in the semi-final of the light flyweight division.
In the penultimate round, he was up against Asylbek Nazaraliev of Kyrgyzstan. Once again the 25-year old had to dig deep to get past Nazaraliev.
The Punjab boxer took a crucial one point lead in the opening round but Nazaraliev rallied to level scores at 8 all in the second. In the final round, Amandeep held on to the lead to win 13-12.
In the final, he plays South Korea's Shin Jong Hu, a World Championship bronze medallist.
"It has been a tough tournament for me. The semifinal round was also not easy; he was a counter-boxer and so I had to time my attacks well. I think my strategy worked and I did well in the end," said an elated Amandeep.
However, there was disappointment in store in the heavyweight and light welter weight category.
Samota, a gold medallist at the Asian Games, went down 13-16 against Asian Junior Championships silver medallist Xuanxuan Wang.
In the light welter weight section, Beniwal lost 13-22 to Munkherdene Vranchimeg of Mongolia
