CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday ordered provision of ‘all terrain jeeps’ and ‘all terrain motorcycles’ to 12 Coast Guard police stations in the State. The measure will cost a non-recurrent expenditure of Rs 1.56 crore and a recurrent expenditure of Rs 48.72 lakh per year. The CM has sanctioned these jeeps and motorcycles because most of the coastal areas do not have proper approach roads preventing  Coast Guard personnel from reaching sandy areas quickly when there is a need.  These vehicles will help improve efficiency in  policing coastal areas.Traffic Police StationsThe Chief Minister also ordered creation of new traffic police stations in five places —Mahabalipuram, Thiruthangal, Bodinaickanur, Thiruthuraipoondi and Padmanabhapuram — considering the increasing number of vehicles in these areas. At present, 206 traffic police stations are functioning in important towns and district headquarters. The CM has also sanctioned the creation of 80 new posts to man these stations.
