Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya breathed his last at his home on Thursday morning. On the day of his death, the names of Singur and Nandigram came up again in the headlines.
Rabindranath Bhattacharya, former MLA of Singur and one-time leader of the agricultural land movement in Singur said, “Buddhdeb Bhattacharya’s Singur land policy was wrong. I personally respect his honesty and loyalty. If his party had accepted the compromise reached by Buddhadeb Babu, former Industries Minister Nirupam Sen, and former Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Singur, there would have been industry in Singur. Since the factory has not been completed, Singur has left traces of anger, sadness, and pain.”
Another Kandari of Singur’s agricultural movement is Becharam Manna. Currently, he is the Agriculture and Marketing Minister of the state. On the death of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Becharam Manna said they respect Buddhababu’s personality. They paid respect to his strategy of ruling. However, he thinks that the people of Singur spontaneously rose against the policy adopted by the left government on the people of Singur.
He further said that people still remember the movement of 2006. The people of Singur are still in opposition to the way the dispute started. The minister also said that although they respect Buddhadeb Bhattacharya personally, they have opposed his policies in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya breathed his last yesterday at his Kolkata residence. Born into a scholarly family and being a prolific writer himself, he was the quintessential gentleman who sought to bring about change not just in West Bengal but also in Left politics.
