BANGALORE: Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy has said that the BBMP is planning to outsource the additional work to clear mess created by the rain. At present, there are 20 light commercial vehicles (Tata 407) and 13 Prahari vehicles at any point of time. In each Tata 407 vehicle, there will be at least 10 men, tree cutting equipment, jackets and helmets for those who will clear the mess.Speaking to reporters, he said that they are planning to outsource the additional resources required during monsoon. “It will be a burden for the BBMP to keep more staff throughout the year. So we are planning to outsource and have one such complete squad in each constituency,” he added.‘Don’t Dump Building Items into Drains'Explaining further, the ruling party leader in BBMP N Nagaraj said that if such squads are nearby, one can clear the mess in a short time.He urged the public to stop dumping construction material near drains, as they result in overflow of drainage in monsoons.Speaking to reporters during an inspection at various rain affected areas on Wednesday, Nagaraj said, “If there is some waste, the workers can block the drains and prevent construction material flowing into drains. These materials block the drains and result in overflow of the sewage.”He said officials concerned will be issued a notice in this regard to alert the property owners and contractors.Lavelle Road Bears the Brunt of DownpourBANGALORE: It took over 12 hours for BBMP officials to clear the mess which the heavy downpour caused on the upmarket Lavelle Road in the city. The officials revealed that over six trees fell and four others suffered heavy damage, as a result of the downpour on Tuesday evening. The residents of Lavelle Road woke up to fallen trees, covering the roads.“The road is already narrow from the rear gate of the Bangalore Club. Starting from there and going up to the main road, there were fallen trees on either side of the road,” said Ashwathi, a resident.Further, unanswered calls at the Palike head office added to the woes.“We kept calling BBMP officials to clear the road all morning and eventually at around 11 am on Wednesday morning the officials turned up. However, they just cut off the dangerously protruding branches that looked like they could fall anytime. But they left the broken branches on the road, causing inconvenience to traffic,” said another resident.A security guard said that the trees had fallen at around 4 pm on Tuesday evening. “Some of the branches were seen fallen on the cable wires and we were instructed to cut it and leave it on the road for other men to clear it,” said one of the labourers, who was assigned to trim the trees. The suffering of the residents of the road lasted for over 20 hours. When Express contacted the officials, they said that the men would be sent on the job immediately. However, till late evening on Wednesday, the officials were not sent to clear the mess.“Some of the trees had to be cut to avoid further damage. A team will be appointed and sent to the area on Thursday and we will make sure that the work is completed without any further delay,” the Mayor asserted. The residents and the motorists continued to suffer all day on Wednesday, due to the apathy of the authorities, who waited for over 24 hours to clear a single road that connects many important areas in the city.
