THRISSUR: Malayalam super star Mohanlal on Friday appeared in a local court here and obtained bail in a defamation case filed against him by leading writer and literary critic Sukumar Azhikode.The case was filed by Azhikode alleging that the actor had made defamatory comments against him in the backdrop of the tiff between Malayalam cine artists association 'Amma' and actor Thilakan last year.Chief Judicial Magistrate P S Antony granted bail to Mohanlal on surety of two close associates of the actor.Azhikode, in his petition filed in February last, alleged that Mohanlal had made made defamatory comments in the backdrop of a raging controversy sparked by Amma's decision to dismiss Thilakan from the association and deny him roles in Malayalam films.The issue sparked a heated debate in cultural circles in Kerala with Azhikode coming out strongly in support of Thilakan alleging that super stars were behind the move.The court had issued notice to Mohanlal to appear before it on June 22.However, citing personal reasons, the actor urged the court to exempt him from personal appearance on the date fixed by it and moved his bail plea on Friday.
