KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the ‘Zero and Safe-to-Eat Vegetables’, a project initiated by the District Administration, on Monday. The programme will be held at the Maharajas College Auditorium at 2.30 pm.The project, which is being carried out by the District Agri-Horticultural Society, in conjunction with the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK), apex councils of the residents’ associations and Better Kochi, aims at giving the Kochiites a chance to savour quality-rich organic vegetables which can be grown at homes.The project also aims at adding momentum to the agricultural sector to keep it on par with the growing IT culture in Kochi. Each household will get 20 seedlings of five different varieties as part of the project. A total of 12,500 families having at least 150 square feet of space on their terraces will be given about 2,50,000 seedlings. Soon, it may be extended to one lakh families.Awareness programmes will be conducted for the residents on safe cultivation of vegetables on the terraces. The total cost per household will be Rs 1,600, of which DAHS will give `800 (that is 50 per cent of the total cost). UV (Ultra violet) stabilised bags to plant seedlings have already distributed for the purpose.These bags contain coconut peat, nutrients, enzymes, etc.The seedlings, organically developed by the VFPCK, will be of high quality.Also brochures regarding effective terrace farming will be provided to the beneficiaries on effective terrace farming. The corporation would execute the project with the People’s Planned Fund allocated for it.
