Shillong: Seven persons were killed today and 35 others severely injured when an overloaded bus in which they were travelling fell into a 35-feet-deep gorge in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district.
The mishap happened at around 9.30 AM on a bridge near Baghmara, district deputy commissioner CP Gotmare told PTI. The driver of the overloaded Baghmara-bound bus lost control of the vehicle while approaching the bridge and it went off the road into a deep gorge, he said.
As per police reports, four persons died on the spot and three others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, Gotmare said.
Thirty five others were severely injured in the accident and all of them were shifted to the neighbouring West Garo Hills district civil hospital, he said.
The driver has been apprehended and kept under police custody where he is being interrogated before he was formally arresting him, he said.
