THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 64th Army Day was celebrated at the Pangode Military Station in the city on Sunday. Wreaths were laid at the war memorial to pay homage to the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service of the nation. Station Commander Brigadier Pradeep Narayanan, Major General (Retd) M N K Nair, Lt Col (Retd) Ramesh Nair, serving and retired personnel in Thiruvananthapuram attended the ceremony. In the evening, a light and sound show, followed by dinner, was organised to showcase the history of the Indian Army. The function was attended by senior service and retired personnel and civilian dignitaries.General K M Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Independent Indian Army on January 15, 1948, which is commemorated as the Army Day every year.In an Investiture ceremony held at the Basantar Auditorium of Madras Engineer Group and Centre, Bangalore, 58 soldiers received awards. Out of these, 32 awards were for gallantry and 26 for distinguished service.
