BHUBANESWAR: Life could not have played a more cruel game on five-year-old Om Prakash Sahoo. Even before the toddler could know anything about life, he is battling for it at the Acharya Harihar Regional Cancer Centre (AHRCC), Cuttack.Afflicted by leukaemia, Om’s condition has been declared to be in a curable stage. But cure seems to be distant dream for the child as his autorickshaw driver father Naresh Kumar Sahoo of Khurda is unable to find a way to meet the high expenditure of treatment.Om was three years when he suddenly developed high fever. He was taken to the paediatric hospital at Khurda where he was treated for liver inflammation and spleen enlargement. However, his condition did not improve and he was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack where he was diagnosed to be suffering from blood cancer.For two years now, he has been in and out of AHRCC receiving treatment. He has been put under chemotherapy and received two sessions as of now. He will have to undergo eight to 10 more chemo sessions. He has also been referred to the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai for evaluation and advanced treatment.But the family members of the five-year-old are not in a position to continue with the treatment, having exhausted all their resources. Social worker Sumitra Panda pitched in arranging financial help from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
