Mumbai: A red alert has been sounded in Mumbai ahead of 26/11's second anniversary. The alert has been issued on the basis of specific intelligence inputs about Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba planning to launch a strike.

The Union Home Ministry issued a red alert for Mumbai on Thursday. Security has been tightened in the city after intelligence warnings that Lashkar-e-Toiba may try to launch an attack in the city on the anniversary of November 26, 2008 terror attacks.

Home Ministry sources say that the intelligence warning came from a western country.

Ten Pakistani terrorists had launched coordinated attack on Mumbai killing at least 166 people and injuring over 200 others. The attack lasted for obver 60 hours with the terrorists targeting major landmarks of the city like the Taj Hotel, the Oberoi Trident Hotel, the Chabad House and Leopold Cafe.

Only one terrorist, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was arrested while the other nine were killed in gunbattle with security forces including the elite commando force, National Security Guards.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Thursday informed the Bombay High Court that it had not accorded permission to National Investigating Agency (NIA) to interrogate Kasab in the 26/11 case and that the agency wanted to question him in some other matter.

Government counsel Ujjwal Nikam submitted that NIA wanted to interrogate Kasab in some other case and not in the 26/11 terror attacks case.

Accordingly, justices Ranjana Desai and RV More disposed of a petition filed by Kasab asking whether NIA had registered an independent case against him and also if it would interrogate him in the 26/11 case.

Kasab, who has been awarded death sentence for his role in killing 166 people in the Mumbai attacks, also sought to know under what provisions Maharashtra had permitted NIA to question him.

The High Court is hearing confirmation of his sentence and his appeal against conviction.
