The technology carnival is about to begin. The seven days beginning on September 3 are the biggest for consumer technology enthusiasts this year. From the next-gen Samsung Galaxy Note to Apple's larger iPhones to Motorola's circular Android Wear smartwatch, the tech biggies are busy setting the stage to capture our eyeballs and wallets. There's a lot happening over the next seven days and these are the ones you shouldn't miss.
1. Samsung: Samsung has its Unpacked event scheduled for September 3. The company is expected to unveil the successor to the Galaxy Note 3. Dubbed the Galaxy Note 4, the next-gen Note is expected counter Apple's new iPhone 6, which, in all probability, is coming on September 9. The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to come with a screen size bigger than the Galaxy S5 and could sport a 2K resolution display. The new Galaxy Note could come in a metal frame. The company will have simultaneous events running in Beijing, Berlin, and New York on the same day.
2. Sony: If rumours are to be believed, the Japanese company, at its press event on September 3, will unveil three new smartphones - the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia E3, a thin waterproof Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, and successors to its SmartWatch and SmartBand wearables.
The Xperia Z3 is likely to come with similar specifications as its predecessor. It is expected to come powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, and a 5.2-inch Triluminous display. Specualtions are rife that the Z3 will have a long battery life - keeping it up for 2 days on a single charge. The pint-sized version of the Z3, dubbed the Z3 Compact, may come with a 4.7-inch 720p display. The budget E3 smartphone may come engineered with a 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and a 4.8-inch display.
The company has also posted a teaser video on its YouTube channel, which, however, hints at three new Xperia devices.
3. Asus: Asus is all set to announce its first wearable device. Named ZenWatch, the upcoming Asus smartwatch will be unveiled on September 3 in Berlin. The smartwatch will be on display at the IFA consumer electronics and appliance trade show. It, reportedly, will run Android Wear and come for under $199.
4. Motorola: The highly successful Moto G and Moto X will see their successors arriving on September 4. Motorola has an event lined up for September 4 in Chicago. The invite hints at the Moto 360, the next-gen Moto G and Moto X smartphones launch. The company has also invited Indian media to its event on September 5 where the company, in all likelihood, will announce the same devices for the Indian market. Based on the recent leaks and speculations, we expect the Moto G to be again priced around Rs 13,000.
5. Microsoft: Microsoft has a 'selfie' phone up its sleeve. Slated to be unveiled on September 4 at its event in Berlin, the phone is speculated to come with a strong 5 megapixel front camera and a 4.7-inch display. It could be labelled "Lumia 730".
6. Lenovo: Lenovo's media invite hints that the company has an Android L-based Vibe X2 smartphone up its sleeve for its September 4 event. It it happens, it will probably be the first smartphone to come running Google's new Android L OS. It may come with a 2.2GHz octa-core CPU, a 5-inch full HD display, and a 13 megapixel rear camera.
7. Huawei: The company may announce its new flagship phablet - the Ascend Mate 7 - at its event on September 4. The phone is rumoured to come with a 6-inch display, 13 megapixel rear shooter and a 5 megapixel front camera.
8. LG: The South Korean tech giant, at the IFA trade show, will announce the launch of the Moto 360-like cirucular smartwatch. The LG G Watch R is said to be the world's first watch-style wearable device to feature a circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display. It utilises 100 per cent of its watch face, says the company. The LG G Watch R is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, offers 4GB of storage, has 512MB of RAM and a 410mAh battery. The pen-enabled LG G3 Stylus smartphone and the Bluetooth MiniBeam projector will also be unveiled at IFA, which takes place from September 5-10.
9. Apple: Apple's September 9 holds signficance for two reasons. First, the company is expected to launch larger iPhones. Second, the event could witness the company's first foray into a new product category - wearables - since the iPad came out in 2010. True to its secretive nature, Apple hasn't given any clues about what's on the September 9 agenda.
Apple watchers expect an iPhone with a larger screen than the 4-inch display on the previous two generations of the device. The iPhone 6 is expected to feature a 4.7-inch screen to make it more competitive with larger smartphones made by Samsung Electronics and other rivals relying on Google's free Android software. There also has been speculation that Apple may release another iPhone model with a 5.5-inch screen.
Besides, the company is highly expected to doff the silk off its first-ever wearable device, which could be named iTime, iWatch, or something else starting with a lowercase 'i'.
