In the United States
Check your status before your state’s registration deadline. In some states, you have to register as early as 30 days before the actual election date. Make sure you get the chance to cast your ballot by checking your status well in advance of the registration deadline! Check your state’s registration deadline at https://www.vote.org/voter-registration-deadlines/. If you need to re-register or change your registration, you can do it online at https://www.vote.org/register-to-vote/ or visit your local election office’s website for more information. You may need to re-register if you’ve recently moved to a new state, changed your name, or changed your party affiliation. Some states also purge their rolls (or lists of registered voters) occasionally, so it’s a good idea to check and make sure your information hasn’t been accidentally removed.
Visit Vote.org for a quick and easy registration check. To check your registration status, visit https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/. There, you’ll need to enter some basic information. The whole process takes about 30 seconds. Alternatively, check your status at https://www.nass.org/can-I-vote or your local election website.
Enter your name, birthdate, address, and any other requested info. No matter which website you use, you’ll need to enter your name, date of birth, and full street address. Follow the prompts and provide any other requested information, such as your email address or your phone number. Click the submit button or “Check your registration” button to see your registration status. Vote.org requests your email address and gives you the option to provide your cell phone number in case you’d like to receive text messages with election-related information. If you check your registration through your local election website, you may only need to provide your name, birthdate, and full address.
Review your registration information to make sure it’s correct. When your registration information pops up, check it to make sure it’s up to date. You might need to update your registration if anything has changed since you last voted, such as your name, address, or party affiliation. This is also an opportunity to check your polling place and make sure you’re planning to head to the right one.
Use the Overseas Vote Foundation website if you’re living abroad. If you’re a military service member or a U.S. citizen living overseas, the registration and voting process is a little different. Go to https://www.overseasvotefoundation.org/vote/VoterInformation.htm to check your registration information, register to vote, or request an absentee ballot. Registration deadlines for overseas voters may be different from deadlines for general voters, so give yourself plenty of time to check and make changes if necessary!
Go to your local election office if you can’t check online. If you aren’t able to check your registration online, or if you feel more comfortable doing it in person, visit your local election office to check. You can find a directory of election offices and their contact information here: https://www.overseasvotefoundation.org/vote/election-official-directory. Depending on your state laws, you might also be able to check your status by phone or by mail. To find out about your options, call your local election office or visit their website.
