Using Cheats
Make sure your game uses the Source engine. Naturally, you can only use Source engine cheats in Source engine games. The following games use the Source engine: Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 Half-Life: Source Half-Life Deathmatch: Source Half-Life 2 series Half-Life 2: Deathmatch Counter-Strike: Source Day of Defeat: Source Team Fortress 2 Portal Alien Swarm Portal 2 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines Garry's Mod SiN Episodes Dark Messiah of Might and Magic The Ship Kuma\War Dystopia Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat Zombie Panic! Source Zeno Clash NeoTokyo Bloody Good Time Vindictus Pirates, Vikings and Knights II E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy No More Room in Hell Nuclear Dawn Postal III Dino D-Day Dear Esther Black Mesa Tactical Intervention The Stanley Parable Blade Symphony Consortium Contagion Insurgency Titanfall Fistful of Frags Portal Stories: Mel The Beginner's Guide Infra Titanfall 2 (uses a modified version of the engine. Your mileage may vary.) Day of Infamy Apex Legends (uses a modified version of the engine. Your mileage may vary.)
Know when you can use cheats. Cheats are largely meant for testing purposes, meaning you'll be able to use them in singleplayer missions and in local multiplayer matches in which you're the host. You cannot use cheats in online multiplayer. Attempting to use cheats in online multiplayer by any other method may result in your account being banned from playing online.
Make sure your keyboard has a tilde key. The tilde ~ is almost universally used to open the developer console. If your keyboard doesn't have a tilde key, you'll need to bind a separate key to the console before you can proceed.
Open your game. Open Steam and sign in if prompted, then select your Source engine game from the LIBRARY section of Steam.
Enable the developer console. In most Source games, the developer console is disabled by default. You can enable it from within the game's settings by doing the following: Click Options Click the Keyboard tab. Click Advanced Check the "Enable Developer Console" box. Save your changes.
Open the console. Press the "Tilde" ~ key in the upper-left side of your computer's keyboard.
Enable cheats. Type in sv_cheats 1 and press ↵ Enter. This will allow you to use cheats in-game.
Enter a cheat code. You can enable a cheat by opening the console, typing in the cheat code, and pressing ↵ Enter. There are several cheat codes which will make most Source games objectively easier: god — Makes your character impossible to kill. impulse 101 — Gives your character every weapon in the game. give name — Gives your character a specific item; you'll replace "name" with the item's name (e.g., give weapon_m3). noclip — Allows you to walk through walls and other obstacles. notarget — Prevents enemy AI from targeting you, though trap-type items and enemies (e.g., mines) can still trigger. sv_gravity 200 — Lowers gravity, meaning you can jump higher than usual.
Disable a cheat. Once you've had enough of a specific cheat, you can disable it by re-opening the console and typing in the cheat's text again.
Binding a Separate Key
Understand when this is necessary. If your computer doesn't have a tilde ~ key, you'll need to bind a different key to the console in order to open it. Fortunately, you can do this from within Steam settings.
Find the Source game you want to use. Open Steam and sign in if prompted, then click the LIBRARY tab and find the game in which you want to cheat.
Right-click the game. A drop-down menu will appear. If your mouse doesn't have a right-click button, click the right side of the mouse, or use two fingers to click the mouse. If your computer uses a trackpad instead of a mouse, use two fingers to tap the trackpad or press the bottom-right side of the trackpad. On a Mac, you can Control-click the game's name.
Click Properties. It's in the drop-down menu. Doing so opens a new window.
Click SET LAUNCH OPTIONS…. You'll find this option near the middle of the window.
Enter the "enable console" command. In the pop-up window which appears, type -console into the text box, then click OK.
Start the game. Once the game loads, you should see the console window appear somewhere on the game's screen.
Bind a key to the console function. Type in bind "key" "toggleconsole"—making sure to replace key with the key you want to use—and press ↵ Enter. From that point on, you'll be able to use your selected key to open the console in-game. For example, to bind the console function to the "K" key, you would type in bind "K" "toggleconsole" here.
