Calling Brazil on Your Phone
Check with your phone service provider to find out the cost of your phone call. Call your phone service provider using their customer service line. Talk to a representative about international calling between the U.S. and Brazil. Charges vary by phone service provider, your phone plan, and which country you're calling. If you plan on making a lot of calls to Brazil, it might be smart to invest in an international phone plan.
Begin your call by typing "011" to exit the United States. The exit code for the United States is "011." This code will let your call out of the U.S., so remember to include it.
Enter "55," Brazil's country code. After entering the exit code, enter Brazil's country code: "55." This code will allow you to place a call in Brazil. The numbers you've dialed should appear in this sequence: "011-55."
Dial the area code for the phone number you’re dialing. After entering Brazil's country code, enter the two-digit area code for the number that you're calling. If you're not sure of the area code, try Googling the location of the number you're trying to reach. So far, the numbers you've dialed should look like this: "011-55-area code."
Dial the number “9” to reach a mobile number. If you're trying to reach a mobile phone in Brazil, you will also need to dial the number 9. 9 is the initial dialing code for all mobile phone numbers in Brazil, so you must include it. If you're calling a mobile phone, the numbers you've dialed should be "011-55-area code-9."
Dial the phone number. Now that you're all set to make calls in Brazil, dial the rest of the phone number. The phone number should have 8 remaining digits. Now, you just need to wait for the caller to pick up the phone. When you've dialed all of the necessary digits, they should look like this: "011-55-area code-9 (for mobile numbers)-8 digit phone number."
Using the Internet to Call Brazil
Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi source. Connect your laptop or smartphone to the internet using a reliable Wi-Fi source. Using Wi-Fi will ensure that you won't be charged data fees or for cellphone minutes. If you don't have Wi-Fi at home, visit the library, a cafe, or a restaurant for free Wi-Fi.
Download WhatsApp onto your device to make your call. Navigate to the WhatsApp website and download the app or software. WhatsApp is the most popular VoIP program in Brazil, where about 93% of mobile phone users regularly chat with WhatsApp. Keep in mind that the app will still charge you for an international call to a landline or a different phone service provider. If you want your call to be free, ask the person who you're calling if they use WhatsApp. If you both use the program to talk, your call will be free! WhatsApp is free to download.
Choose Facetime to place your phone call. If you're an iOS user, then you probably already have a free VoIP program on your device! Navigate through your apps and programs, looking for Facetime: you'll need to select the green icon that features a white silhouette of a video camera. If you plan on calling someone who doesn't use iOS, you'll have to choose another method of contacting them. Facetime only supports Apple devices.
Download Skype to make your call. Skype is another popular free VoIP program that you can use to call Brazil. Use the browser on your device to navigate to the Skype website and download the app or software. You can choose to log in with your Microsoft account if you have one. Otherwise, you can create a dedicated Skype account. Like WhatsApp, Skype is free to download.
Research other VoIP program options on the internet. If WhatsApp, Skype, or Facetime doesn't suit your needs, search Google for other VoIP programs. There are dozens of VoIP programs that have various capabilities like speed dial, group calling, and conference calling. Keep in mind that many VoIP programs with lots of additional capabilities cost money, like Google Voice. Free apps tend to provide more basic calling and texting services.
Enter the phone number into your VoIP program and hit the dial button. Type in the whole phone number, including the area code. You may or may not need to provide the U.S. exit code. Check with your VoIP program to see whether or not this code is necessary.
