In the recent case involving actor Danny Masterson, who was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for sexual assault, notable figures from the entertainment industry, including his former co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, submitted character reference letters to the court. As per the latest report, these letters pleaded for the actor’s sentence to be reduced and stressed his commitment to discouraging drug use. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis worked with Danny Masterson in the popular TV series That ’70s Show. Later, Ashton Kutcher also worked with the actor on Netflix’s The Ranch.
As per a report by Variety, in this letter, Ashton Kutcher described Danny Masterson as a “role model.” Mila Kunis praised Masterson’s “exceptional character” and described him as an “outstanding older brother figure.” The portal quoted an excerpt from Ashton’s letter that read, “While I’m aware that the judgement has been cast as guilty on two counts of rape by force and the victims have a great desire for justice, I hope that my testament to his character is taken into consideration in sentencing. I do not believe he is an ongoing harm to society and having his daughter raised without a present father would [be] a tertiary injustice in and of itself. Thank you for taking the time to read this.”
While the portal quoted the Mila Kunis letter, It reads, “I wholeheartedly vouch for Danny Masterson’s exceptional character and the tremendous positive influence he has had on me and the people around him. His dedication to leading a drug-free life and the genuine care he extends to others make him an outstanding role model and friend.”
Both the actors vouched for Danny Masterson’s drug-free life and how he influenced their lives as well. Mila wrote, “One of the most remarkable aspects of Danny’s character is his unwavering commitment to discouraging the use of drugs. His influence on me in this regard has been invaluable.” Ashton also mentioned that Danny was instrumental in steering him away from substance abuse while working in an industry where the pressures and temptations may be overpowering. Reportedly, one of the arguments against Danny was that he drugged women before sexually assaulting them.
Kurtwood Smith, Debra Rupp, David Trainer, Giovanni Ribisi, and Jim Patterson, among other celebrities, expressed similar thoughts in their character reference letters for Danny Masterson.
Danny Masterson was charged with three counts of rape in June 2020, stemming from alleged events between 2001 and 2003. In December, his 2022 court case ended in a mistrial. Reportedly, the judge chose to retry the case, and the actor faced a second trial this year, where he was found guilty of two counts of rape. On September 7, he was sentenced to 30 years in jail.
