Manchester: Manchester United officially joined Twitter on Wednesday and have already got 140,000 followers and counting.

The Red Devils made the announcement with the words "New era, same spirit. The season starts here. Let's do this. #mufc".

According to crave.cnet.co.uk, the account - with the handle @ManUtd - promises "iconic artwork, behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive content" from the Premier League champions.

Since that first tweet on Wednesday morning, missives from Old Trafford include pictures of red-shirted legends George Best, Booby Charlton and Denis Law; a snap of team captain Rio Ferdinand celebrating with the Premier League trophy; and a stern-faced image of new manager David Moyes, who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson this summer.

So far, @ManUtd is only following the club's players, including Michael Carrick, Robin van Persie, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney, who describes himself rather charmingly as a "NikeUK athlete".

Foreign-language versions of the Man Utd Twitter feed will soon join the English language account. And to reach more fans overseas, the Red Devils have also launched a page on Sina Weibo, the vast Chinese social network that has over 500 million registered users.

Manchester United are back in action on 11 August when they take on FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic at Wembley in the FA Community Shield, before travelling to Swansea when the Premier League season kicks off again on 17 August.
