New Delhi: Former Indian football skipper IM Vijayan was full of praise for the Indian football team after their fantastic display in Nehru Cup. India on Sunday defeated Cameroon 5-4 on penalties after normal time was finished at 2-2 to lift the tournament third time in a row.
Former skipper was impressed by the fearless display and "never-say-die attitude" shown by the team throughout the tournament and had a special praise for star striker and captain Sunil Chhetri, who led from front.
"I am really impressed with the character and immense fighting spirit shown by this Indian team in the final," he said.
"Chhetri has gained in experience, he has played with the likes of Bhaichung Bhutia for long and he was excellent in the tournament. Especially in the second half of the final match, he was creating problems for the Cameroonians," he added.
Meanwhile, Vijayan refused to compare players of different generation.
"I don't want to compare a Chhetri with Bhaichung or any other past players. There were P K Banerjee, Krishanu Dey, Inder Singh, me, Bhaichung and so on. Indian football has moved ahead after the retirement of all these players. An individual player does not make a team."
