Ferguson hints at signing "two or three players"
Ferguson said: "We have certain targets in mind and two or three will be fulfilled.

New Jersey: Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that Manchester United are hopeful of bringing in two or three new players this summer and revealed that the club's owners have been "very supportive" of his efforts to improve the team.

However, the veteran manager maintained that the spending will go towards bring in young prospects instead of bolstering the squad with an experienced player.

Speaking to reporters in New Jersey after publicising the club's upcoming pre-season tour of the USA, Ferguson said: "We have certain targets in mind and two or three will be fulfilled.

"The Glazers have always been very supportive in terms of the desire to improve the team.

"Where we are good at is bringing in young players, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez. We’re good at that, so I don’t see why we should change.

"With Hernandez, we have one of the best young strikers in the country. We’ll continue the way we’re going and when the right young players are identified, that’s the way we will go."

The veteran boss also revealed that he would not be too disappointed if his side fail to win the treble for the second time in his tenure, as long as they manage to secure one of the three trophies they are competing to win this season.

The only time that United won the treble under the Scot was in 1999, when a stoppage-time winner by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich secured their third trophy that season.

Despite being less than inspiring on occasion this year, the Red Devils are still challenging on three fronts. They will face local rivals Manchester City in the semi-final of the FA Cup, Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and currently sit at the top of the Premier League.

"We must have a chance [of winning the Treble] but it’s a very difficult one," he said.

"Going away from the greed of winning three trophies, if you can win one a year you have to be happy with that. If it turns out we win only one of those big trophies, I’ll be delighted."

He added: "I think it’s more difficult than it was in 1999. Back then we went through the last three months of the season without an injury.

"It’s amazing, that kind of luck, because at the moment we have so many injuries to defenders.

"But there’s a great desire to do it [the treble]. Anyone given the opportunity to achieve that target would try to go for it.

"I’m happy with the character of players. They never give in, no matter the score. You always think Manchester United are going to score in the last minute, which is a fantastic advantage to have."

United are set to tour in the USA this coming July, facing off against New England Revolution, Seattle Sounders, Chicago Fire, the MLS All-Stars and Barcelona.
