The University of Southampton UK is set to establish a campus in the country. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed the varsity to open a campus in Gurugram making it the first UK based university to do so. Courses will be offered in business and management, computing, law, engineering, art and design, biosciences, and life sciences. Classes will commence in July 2025.
“The Indian campus of the University of Southampton is expected to start its academic programmes in July 2025. The courses offered will be in subjects focusing on: business and management, computing, law, engineering, art and design, biosciences, and life sciences. With the starting of an Indian campus of the University of Southampton will be beneficial for students, in terms of extending course and study opportunities in India, and for research, knowledge exchange, enterprise and engagement,” Chairman, UGC Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar said.
The University of Southampton, UK had earlier submitted a proposal for the opening of a branch in Gurugram. The standing committee consisting of noted academicians from India and abroad approved the proposal and issued the Letter of Intent as per regulations, states the official press release.
The degrees awarded by the Indian campus will be the same as the UK one. “The programmes offered in the branch campus of the University of Southampton in India will have the same academic and quality standards,” the institute said. A two-time top 100 university, it has been ranked 81st in the QS World University Rankings, 2024, and 97th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, 2024, the varsity added.
“It is a research intensive university that is focused on a triple helix of education, research and impact. A mix of faculty is planned, with a multi-national composition made up of academic and professional services staff from many countries, including the UK and India,” the press release stated.
