The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) will hold the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2025 for admission to postgraduate engineering degrees. Moreover, the institute has published the GATE 2025 syllabus and exam pattern on its new official website, gate2025.iitr.ac.in. GATE is a computer-based test administered jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on behalf of the Ministry of Education (MoE) in the country.

The GATE 2025 will be held for three hours and consist of 30 test papers, including full and sectoral papers. The portions will include General Aptitude (GA) and the candidate’s chosen subjects. Questions in the candidate’s chosen subjects will be of various forms, such as multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select questions (MSQ), and/or numerical answer type (NAT).

Negative markings will be applied to each incorrect answer in the MCQ section. For each incorrect one-mark MCQ, one-third of the mark will be deducted. For a two-mark MCQ, a two-third mark deduction will be applicable. There is no negative grading for incorrect answers to MSQ or NAT questions, but candidates will also not get partial marks in MSQs.

The test papers will be administered in English. Each GATE paper carries 100 marks. The General Aptitude (GA) section is common to all papers (15 points), while the remainder of the paper covers the specific test paper syllabus (85 points).

As per the rules of the institute, an applicant is allowed to take up to two tests. However, each candidate should submit only one application. If they want to appear for the second paper, they might include it in their original application. The official statement mentions that if there are several applications, only one will be approved, and the remaining applications will be denied with no refund for the application fees.

Candidates currently in the third or final year of any undergraduate degree programme or who have completed any government-approved degree programme (Engineering/ technology/ architecture/ science/ commerce/ arts/ humanities) are eligible to take GATE 2025. Moreover, students who want to take the exam should keep a check on the website for more details on the exam schedule and application.
