Deoria’s Lok Sabha MP, district magistrate, chief development officer, and superintendent of police have a common connection – they are all IITians. Officials and locals while terming this unique alignment a “blessing in disguise” for the district in Uttar Pradesh said it would help in better synchronisation and effective implementation of welfare schemes, with the goal of bringing Deoria at par with other developed regions.

Deoria’s MP is Shashank Mani Tripathi, an IIT Delhi alumnus and MBA from Lausanne, Switzerland. District magistrate Divya Mittal has studied at IIT Delhi and IIM Mumbai, superintendent of police Sankalp Sharma at IIT Roorkee, and chief development officer Pratyush Pandey at IIT Kanpur and IIM Ahmedabad.

DM Divya Mittal

Mittal calls it just a coincidence. “I think more than imparting a technical education, Indian Institute of Technology also gives you a bent of mind, which is scientific in nature. It also teaches you well to handle a problem in a professional way and since we all are from the same background, I am sure we will be able to work systematically and resolve the problems of the district,” the district magistrate told News18 on Wednesday.

Divya Mittal, a 2013-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, hails from Haryana’s Rewari district. She cracked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services examination in her first attempt, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 68 in 2012. She initially joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) and later became an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in 2013. Known for her developmental work, she has served as the district magistrate of Mirzapur, Sant Kabir Nagar, and other areas, making significant contributions, such as providing water access to Lahuria Deh village in Mirzapur.

Mittal earlier worked as an investment banker in London. She holds an MBA degree from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bengaluru and a BTech from IIT Delhi. She has served as the CEO of the UP Rural Roads Development Agency (UPRRDA) in Lucknow, after being transferred from Basti district. Mittal’s dedication and impactful work have earned her widespread recognition and heartfelt farewells, including when local women showered her with rose petals upon her transfer from Mirzapur.

CDO Pratyush Pandey

Pratyush Pandey, a 27-year-old IAS officer who graduated from IIT Kanpur and is posted as the CDO in Deoria, said this combination of officials and local MP will surely help bring development to the district.

“Being an IITian actually helps and makes your task easy. It helps pick up new things, opt for new ways, and easily tackle technical hassles. I am sure that the unique synchronisation would help in taking development in Deoria to another level,” he told News18.

Pandey was a joint magistrate in Bareilly and graduated from IIT Kanpur with an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. He passed the UPSC exam on his first attempt and joined the list of toppers with the 21st rank. He is the youngest IAS officer posted in the district so far.

SP Sankalp Sharma

Deoria SP Sankalp Sharma cleared the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) in 2003 and did his BTech and MTech in chemical science from IIT Roorkee.

He said that being an engineer is of great help even in policing as it changes the individual’s approach towards problems and helps solve them in a different way.

Sharma did not give up even after not succeeding in his first two attempts at the exam and cleared it on the third try.

MP Shashank Mani Tripathi

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Shashank Mani Tripathi is a 55-year-old first-time Lok Sabha MP from Deoria Sadar.

Tripathi is an alumnus of IIT Delhi where he got a BTech degree and holds an MBA from a business school in Lausanne, Switzerland.

He also studied at Colvin Taluqdars’ College in Lucknow, where he won the Jahangirabad gold medal in sports and athletics.

At IIT Delhi, he served as deputy general secretary for the sports activities board, leading the institute to its first victory in the annual Inter IIT Sports Meet.
