‘The Seniors Will be There’: Jay Shah Confirms Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma for 2025 Champions Trophy and World Test Championship
Quashing the rumors that the senior players could get sidelined under the new Team India coach, BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed that the senior members of the team will be around for a while

With the announcement of a new head coach for Team India imminent, and with Gautam Gambhir front-runner to get the job, there were rumors that Gambhir if he takes over, will take the harsh call of sidelining the senior members of Team India in a bid to infuse fresh blood within the team. The names of Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma – for obvious reasons – did the rounds as the ‘seniors’ players who could be axed from the Indian scheme of things in the new future.

Both Kohli and Sharma retired from T20Is after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win against South Africa in the Caribbean, with both more or less set to focus on the longer formats. India’s next big target in terms of ICC trophies will be the 2025 Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship Final.

And BCCI secretary Jay Sha confirmed that the senior members of the team will be around for the two big events.

“I would want India to win all the titles. We have the biggest bench strength, only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises. The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Shah told PTI.

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held in Pakistan but there’s no clarity if BCCI will send its team for the competition. The International Cricket Council has reportedly zeroed in on the window and the tournament will reportedly get underway from February 19 with the final to be held on March 9.
