India batter Suryakumar Yadav was left impressed by Glenn Maxwell’s power-hitting masterclass unfolded in Australia’s second T20I against the West Indies on Sunday. Maxwell appeared at his devastating best in the high-scoring clash, helping his team produce a mammoth 241 runs in the first innings. The Aussie all-rounder notched a blazing hundred, scoring an unbeaten 120 off just 55 deliveries. The entertaining knock was laced with as many as twelve boundaries and eight maximums.
With the heroic ton, Maxwell equalled the record of Indian captain Rohit Sharma to score the most centuries in the shortest format. The Aussie big man currently has five T20I hundred under his belt. While Rohit has taken 151 matches to achieve the feat, Maxwell has reached the milestone in 102 games.
Surya follows the duo on the list, having registered four hundreds in 60 T20Is. After Australia’s innings was wrapped up at the Adelaide Oval, SKY dropped a story on Instagram where he wrote, “Oh boy. Perfect Sunday. Entertainment.”
Australia failed to make a positive start to the match, with David Warner and Mitchell Marsh returning to the pavilion during the powerplay. Maxwell took over the charge following the wicket of Josh Inglish when the hosts were reeling at 64/3. Riding on his centurion knock, Australia once again came back to the contest. Tim David also demonstrated his big-hitting prowess with a 31-run cameo, which comprised two fours and as many sixes.
Coming in to chase, the West Indies also lost a few early wickets. Captain Rovman Powell came up with a blistering 63, while Andre Russel smashed 37 runs off 16 balls. Their efforts, however, were not enough to change the course of the game as the visitors fell 34 runs short of the huge target.
Maxwell, who was named the Player of the Match, spoke about his innings in the post-match show. He said, “Didn’t hit the gaps right from the outset. It was such a beautiful pitch. Once I hit a few boundaries, I calmed down. I made a good decision against Akeal when he bowled that inswinger. I was watching the ball and wasn’t trying to hit everything. There were a few miscues. I am comfortable in this format.”
With back-to-back victories, Australia have taken an unassailable lead in the T20I series against the West Indies. The last game of the three-match series will be played on February 13 in Perth.
