As the Wankhede stadium hosted the high-voltage clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the fans craved for the match-up between superstars Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. The RCB fans expected another cracker of a knock from their former captain, given his red-hot form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
However, Kohli struggled big time as he walked to open the innings with skipper Faf du Plessis. After playing 5 dot balls during his 9-ball stint in the middle, he fell prey to Bumrah and walked back into the dressing room with a score of 3.

It was the third over when Bumrah came into the attack and started troubling Kohli with his varied lengths. The pacer set up the RCB opener with a short ball and then bowled fuller before pitching one at a good length. Kohli looked to swing across the line but the ball caught an inside edge and MI stumper Ishan Kishan dove to his left and completed a fine catch.

Bumrah vs Kohli in IPL
This was the fifth instance when Bumrah got the better of Virat Kohli in an IPL face-off. The rivalry dates back to 2013 when the former made his debut in Bengaluru and had trapped the former RCB captain in his very first over to bag his maiden wicket in the cash-rich tournament.
So far, Kohli has scored 140 runs against Bumrah in 95 balls, striking at a rate of 147.36.
Mumbai Chose to Bowl
Earlier, MI won the toss and elected to bowl. They made one change in the squad, bringing in Shreyas Gopal to replace Piyush Chawla. Skipper Hardik Pandya said he chose to bowl first because the track would be better to bat second as there was dew in the last couple of days.
“Similar track but in the evening (it) might be better to bat on. There was dew the last couple of days,” said Pandya at the toss.
The MI captain said the mood is the same in the camp after their victory in the last match after three successive defeats.
“Mood before and after the win has been the same. We play every game with a fresh start. Want to put early pressure with the new ball,” he said.
On the other hand, RCB captain Faf du Plessis would have also liked to chase. They handed a debut to England’s Will Jacks, also bringing in Mahipal Lomror and Vijaykumar Vyshak.
“We’ve tried to change a few things around. Our plan today is to bring a few fresh faces and give them chances. We want to make as few changes as possible but when you reach yourself in this position where you don’t play your best cricket, then you have to make a brave decision,” Du Plessis said.
