If it is broken, well then the ICC said they’ll fix it. Much criticism has been lashed out on the uneven and subpar conditions of the pitch constructed at the Nassau County Stadium, which is slated to host the high-octane India vs Pakistan clash on Sunday, and the ICC said they are dedicated to correcting their wrongs before the same.
A proposal to move away the game to a different location was said to have been on the cards initially, but organisers have resorted to remedies to address the issue raised regarding the uneven bounce of the pitch.
Another issue that arose with relocation was the reimbursing of a fully sold-out 30,000-capacity stadium. Hence, the option was voted against.
The consequences of the organiser’s negligence have been faced by the players who have taken to the field, including the likes of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who has to retire hurt after his innings against Ireland.
After the match, ICC themselves had addressed the complaints raised in an official statement assuring that the pitch shall be tended to.
“T20 inc [the organising committee] and the ICC recognise that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted,” the statement read. “The world-class grounds team have been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches”, read the statement from ICC.
The inconsistent bounce has been attributed to the grassy veins in the track, and in order to remedy the same, the pitches are set to be top-dressed and levelled in order to flatten them all and lessen the impact of the veins present.
While this may not make for the most ideal of pitches or completely solve all the issues that have been raised, it will be a step towards ensuring a safer and more suitable option in the present moment, with the IND vs PAK clash set to take place tomorrow.
The rivalry between the two neighbours has been fostered by passion, aggression and an intense hatred towards losing to each other for more than half a century and the advent of white-ball cricket has only stoked the embers as the two countries had frequently played cricket at neutral venues in the 1980s and 90s.
And yet another chapter in the tale is set to be added, as both sides face off in the Nassau County Stadium in New York on Sunday.
