Royal Challengers Bengaluru crashed to their sixth defeat in a row, seventh overall of IPL 2024, in a thrilling clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday. Chasing 223, RCB dragged the contest into the final over but KKR held on to win by one run.
Virat Kohli though had gotten the chase to a rapid start with two sixes and a four before a controversial end to his innings on 18 off 7. The dismissal left Kohli furious as he argued with the on-field umpires before shaking his head while heading back to the RCB dug-out.
What happened?
Kohli, batting on 18 off 6, was caught off-guard by a high full toss from KKR pacer Harshit Rana with the ball dipping. The RCB opener was looking to defend it but got a leading edge with the ball lobbing back to the bowler for an easy catch. With the on-field umpires judging it as out. Kohli, smiling, immediately called for a review, certain that the ball was above his waist.
What was TV umpire’s Decision?
Replays showed that Kohli met the ball batting out of his crease and indeed it was above his waist. Ball-tracking then predicted that the ball would have been met by Kohli below his waist if he was in his usual stance inside the crease.

As per the Hawk-Eye technology being used in IPL 2024 to adjudge no-balls for above waist height, it was predicted that the ball would have passed Kohli at a height of 0.92 meteres from the ground. Kohli’s waist was measured at 1.04 metres meaning if the former RCB captain was in his normal stance, the ball would have passed below his waist and hence, it was a legal delivery.
