Batting legend Virender Sehwag has claimed he was once offered a contract by the Big Bash League (BBL) after he was dropped from the Indian team during his playing career but he turned it down because the financial remuneration wasn’t good enough.
Sehwag was responding to a query from Australia legend Adam Gilchrist on whether there’s a future where Indian players could start featuring in overseas leagues in addition to IPL.
However, Sehwag rejected the possibility claiming the amount he offered to play in BBL was nearly the same that he spends on his holidays.
“No! Why? No need. We are rich people, we don’t go to poor countries,” quipped Sehwag on Club Prairie Fire podcast on YouTube.
“I still remember that when I retired from the Indian team, not retired but dropped and was playing IPL, I received an offer to participate in Big Bash. I said that okay how much money you are offering? They said some $100,000. I replied I can spend that much that much money on my holidays,” he added.
Gilchrist chimed in saying their tequila bill equivalent to the BBL offer before Sehwag replied, “Absolutely! Last night’s bill was more than $100,000.”
Sehwag to spend a month in a different country playing cricket league, he was only interested if the offer was in the millions (dollar).
“Going out for one month playing Big bash or The Hundred, where you get only that $100,000, maybe $200,000. If you talk about millions, yes then I’m interested otherwise no,” he added.
He then narrated another incident where he was apparently asked by a British media conglomerate to join their panel but it the broadcaster backed out once Sehwag revealed his remuneration.
“So once once I got a call from Sky Sports that ‘We’ll love to have you in in our panel.’ I said ‘You can’t afford me’. But they said, ‘No, give me your price’. I said ‘You can’t afford me but they said ‘Please give us the price’. Then I said okay ‘£10,000 a day’ and they said, ‘Yes you’re right we can’t'”.
