The Afghanistan T20Is at home saw Rohit Sharma returning to the set-up after 14 months. However, the Indian captain is yet to score a run in the series. The team has performed phenomenally and has ticked all the boxes, given it’s the last bilateral series before the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States. However, the captain is yet to break the shackles and get into the groove.
Rohit was run out in the first match in Mohali due to a terrible mixup with his partner Shubman Gill. Later in Indore, he was knocked over first ball by Fazalhaq Farooqi. The opening batter shimmied down the track to slog but ended up swinging across the line. The ball hit the top of Rohit’s off stump, sending him packing for a golden duck.
The likes of Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal stepped up to sail the Indian ship safely to the shore. However, Rohit’s twin failure has become one of the major talking points. Former India spinner and a Jio Cinema expert Murali Kartik said the Indian captain has been the ‘only failure’ in India’s campaign so far against Afghanistan.
“The only failure has been the skipper. Two naughts in two games but he wouldn’t be too worried about that. Back in this format after a long time. Back as captain. He was run out in the first game. Tried to hit a big one today and lost his stumps but India have done well,” Kartik said on commentary.
150 T20I caps for Rohit
Earlier on Sunday, Rohit became the first-ever male cricketer to play 150 T20I games for the country.
“It’s a great feeling [to get 150 T20I caps]. It’s been a long journey, starting in 2007. I think we are very clear about what we want to do and achieve. When you see performances like that, you can feel very proud of it. There’s one thing to talk about it and another to go out and do it. We’ve ticked almost every box,” the Indian captain said in the post-match presentation.
