Adaptation of stories and remaking them in a different language by tweaking the storyline is quite a common practice. After all, the concept of a movie can be enjoyed by people across the world. However, often a movie and its makers land in trouble after they steal a script without buying its rights.
In 1982, Rama Narayanan made a Tamil romantic-comedy movie featuring Karthik, Suresh, Radha and Vijayashanti titled Ilanjodigal. The dialogues are written by Thooyavan and the screenplay is by Kalaignanam. It was backed by N Sakunthala.
The movie narrates the story of Sivagami Nachiyar who is an arrogant millionaire and lives with her daughters Geetha and Sitha in an ancestral bungalow. She is rude and does not permit her daughters to even look outside the window of the house. She wants to get her daughters married but has turned down and humiliated many suitors. However, as soon as she leaves home for a few days, her daughters fall in love with crooks- Buddy Raju and Putturaja. But, will the mother accept their relationship? This forms the premise of the movie. While the film itself received negative reviews for its cheap vulgarity and exaggerated humour.
The movie Ilanjodigal caught the attention of a Hindi producer who reportedly came to Chennai to negotiate the rights for the movie. In 1986, Esmayeel Shroff directed a movie titled Love 86. It featured Tanuja, Govinda, Neelam Kothari, Rohan Kapoor, Farha Naaz and many others. The premise of the movie. However, when it was found out that the movie had been made without buying the rights, reportedly, an artist sued the Bollywood producer and filed a case in Mumbai court and was given Rs 60,000.
Similarly, in 1964, Tapi Chanakya made a movie named Ramudu Bheemudu in the Telugu language and starred NT Rama Rao, Jamuna and L Vijayalakshmi. The movie turned out to be a trendsetter and inspired remakes in various languages like Enga Vaitt Pillai in Tami, and Ram Aur Shyam in Hindi.
Later in 1972, Ramesh Sippy altered the movie’s formula and made Seeta Aur Geeta starring Hema Malini in the lead. The producer of the Tamil movie was reportedly furious with writers Salim-Javed for copying the story and quickie gained the rights to remake Seeta Aur Geeta into other languages like Ganga Manga in Telugu and Vani Rani in Tamil.
