Tamil film Aneethi, starring Arjun Das and directed by Vasanthabalan, made its theatrical debut on July 21. The title, Aneethi, translates to injustice and the film sheds light on the exploitation of the working class by individuals with wealth and power. It has garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences alike, and it is now available for streaming on OTT platforms Amazon Prime Video and Aha.
Aha, known for its array of original shows and Telugu movies, is owned by Arha Media & Broadcasting Private Limited, a collaborative venture between Geetha Arts and My Home Group.
The storyline of Aneethi revolves around Thiru, portrayed by Arjun Das, who works as a food delivery agent at a firm called Meal Monkey. Thiru, along with his love interest Subbu, played by Dushara Vijayan, faces mistreatment from customers due to their working-class status. Subbu works as a domestic help in the home of an affluent elderly woman where she encounters similar discrimination. The couple’s lives take a drastic turn when the elderly woman is found dead and her family accuses Thiru and Subbu of murder for financial gain. The film delves into the question of whether they are guilty or victims of a false accusation. Aneethi cast also includes Bharani, Pugazh, Suresh Chakravarthi, Jsk Satish Kumar, Kaali Venkat and others.
Vasanthabalan shared insights into his preparation for the film in an interview with The Times of India. He revealed that he invested significant time conversing with hundreds of delivery boys to gain a deeper understanding of their challenges. Vasanthabalan’s decision to cast Arjun as the lead protagonist may have surprised some viewers, as the actor had primarily portrayed antagonist roles in Tamil films.
However, Vasanthabalan emphasised that, in his films, the actors, not heroes, take on the lead roles. He selected Arjun Das because he recognised the actor’s ability to push boundaries and deliver exceptional performances, making him a perfect fit for the film.
