Mumbai: The markets ended weak on the back of negative cues from markets across the globe. However, the markets have outperformed Asian peers and some of the emerging markets.
Asia closed quite soft and European markets have also opened weak. The Sensex closed at 12,236.78 down 37.49 points and the Nifty closed at 3544 down 9 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,016.10 down 20.07 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,007.41 down 34.46 points.
Earlier the markets opened in the negative terrain on the back of weak global cues. At 9:56 am, the Sensex was down 92 points at 12181and the Nifty was at 3528 down 23 points.
Top losers on the indices were Reliance Comm, ONGC, Satyam, ITC and Hindalco.
Asian markets were trading lower. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.24 per cent or 196.94 points at 15,637.29.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 0.55 per cent or 97.38 points, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted was down 0.30 per cent or 20.68 points, Singapore's Straits Times plunged 0.39 per cent or 9.88 points and South Korea's Seoul Composite was down 1.32 per cent or 18.03 points.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 79.96 points, or 0.69 per cent, to 11,533.23.
