Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Wednesday opened higher by 87 points on buying by funds and retail investors in heavyweight shares, triggered by firming Asian stock markets.

The 30-share index, which gained 44.54 points on Tuesday, moved up by 87.40 points to 16,871.27 in the first five minutes of trade.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange's index Nifty also rose by 30.90 points to 5,080.20.

Marketmen said the strength in domestic stock markets was triggered by the firmness in Asian markets.

Stocks of power, engineering, realty, banking and consumer goods companies were major gainers in early trade, lifting the Sensex higher.

However, technology sector stocks such as TCS and Satyam computers continued to remain under selling pressure.
