Dubai: India's IT exports are growing at more than 30 per cent annually and are expected to cross $50 billion in early 2008, a senior official has said.

The country's IT exports to west Asia are expected to cross $1 billion in 2007 from $700 million last year, but the global IT powerhouse is also looking at new markets like Africa as well, D K Sareen, Executive Director of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council of India (ESC) of the Union Ministry of Commerce, said.

Currently more than 65 per cent of India's IT exports go to the US while 25 per cent is targeted at Europe.

Sareen, who was in Dubai on his way from Johannesburg where 32 Indian companies attended an IT show, told PTI on Sunday that during the current year, electronics and IT exports from India are estimated at $36.67 billion, up from $25.89 billion in 2005-06. Today India's IT exports are touching 200 destinations globally.

Though Indian IT and electronics exports are doing well in the US, Europe and Japan, there are other markets like Africa waiting to be tapped, he added.

Riding on the back of solid growth in Computer Software & services, ESC is evolving strategies for facilitating India's IT exporters enhance their ICT exports to different global destinations, Sareen said.

Recently ESC organised its member exporters participation at FUTUREX 2007, an ICT exhibition in Johannesburg. India was granted the honour of partner country.

"This initiative will assist in furthering India's electronics and IT exports to South Africa and other neighbouring countries in a big way," Sareen said.

The participation is an awakening for the Indian IT sector to the huge opportunities offered by the African market, he added. ESC is devising new strategies to expand market share in the Mideast.

"IT exports from India to the West Asia, particularly to the UAE have increased substantially in recent years. We see huge potential for further growth," said Kamal Vachani, regional director of ESC in Dubai.

"It is expected that the initiatives and the aggressive marketing strategies taken by ESC will surely help in augmenting India's ICT exports globally particularly to this region," he said.

As part of the West Asia and Africa expansion, ESC has recently entered the South African market.

"We see huge potential in South Africa and the neighbouring African markets. We will continue to anchor our Africa strategies through the UAE," Sareen said.

"Japan now accounts for less than three per cent of our exports. We are working on strategy to improve the Japanese language skills of our IT engineers and managers," Sareen said.

In the West Asia, ESC plans to organise more sharply focused export shows that will give more exposure to Indian IT products and services.
