Govt may announce stimulus package ahead of polls
There will be no tax sops but sector specific help instead.

New Delhi: After reducing petrol and diesel prices, the Government is set to give more good news. Network 18 has learnt that a third stimulus package to boost the economy could be on its way soon.

The next package is unlikely to have major tax giveaways but will be sector specific.

Sources also say that economic survey will not be presented in the in the next Parliament session and instead will be presented with the full Budget later this year.

No major fiscal and policy announcements will be made in interim Budget slated on February 16, 2009. A full budget is likely in the next two-three months after the new government at the Centre is sworn in.

Government sources have also said that the exercise to assess the impact of the previous economic packages is already on. The assessment is being carried out by the Finance Minister who is meeting PSU bankers.

Meanwhile, acting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee says the Government is closely monitoring the economy and appropriate steps will be taken on time.

"We have taken two stimulus measures already through the stimulus packages. The economy is as sound as hinted by the RBI Governor in the recent credit policy," he stated.
