Aamir Khan’s first venture into directing, Taare Zameen Par, holds a special place in the hearts of Indians, celebrated for its profound narrative, stellar performances, and impactful messages. Tisca Chopra’s portrayal of Maya Awasthi, the mother of a dyslexic child named Ishaan (played by Darsheel Safary), struck a chord with the audience. During a nostalgic interview, Tisca Chopra reminisced about her time working alongside Aamir Khan.
In her conversation with Siddharth Kanan, Tisca Chopra shared a memorable anecdote about Aamir Khan, revealing, “Aamir once humorously suggested that selling tissue papers with the movie tickets could have doubled our profits,” indicating the film’s emotional depth. “Karan Johar was brought to tears by the film,” she added, highlighting its universal appeal.
Venturing into filmmaking herself, Tisca praised the invaluable lessons she learned from Aamir Khan. “Working with him was akin to attending the Aamir Khan School of Filmmaking. He threw himself into the directorial role with such dedication, inviting us to engage deeply with the filmmaking process, from scene blocking to lens selection. His passion and authenticity deeply impressed me,” she conveyed.
Addressing the rumors of Aamir Khan’s demanding work style, Tisca clarified, “I never found working with him to be difficult. Personally, being detail-oriented, I valued his commitment to perfection. There were times I sought additional takes to perfect my parts, which might have tested his patience, but overall, it was an enriching experience. The effort he invested in every film detail ensured its quality was unparalleled.”
In the year 2007, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan played Ram Shankar Nikumbh, an art instructor, in the film Taare Zameen Par. This cinematic opus served as India’s official submission to the Oscars back in the day. It was a refreshing departure from the traditional teaching approach. Ram ignited the spark of imagination in the heart of 8-year-old Ishaan Awasthi, played by Darsheel Safary. Encouraging Ishaan to venture beyond the confines of textbooks, step outside the ordinary classroom walls and breathe life into his imagination through the vibrant strokes of paint, Ram became the teacher we all yearned for.
The central theme of the film is dyslexia, shedding light on the struggles faced by children with learning disabilities. By portraying Ishaan’s journey, the film successfully raises awareness about dyslexia and encourages open discussions among parents, schools, activists, and policymakers. It challenges preconceived notions about learning and underscores the importance of recognising individual talents and creativity in the academic setting.
Beyond its focus on dyslexia, Taare Zameen Par subtly critiques the conformity ingrained in the education system. The film prompts viewers to question the narrow definitions of success and the emphasis on note learning, advocating for a more holistic and inclusive approach to education.
