Mahindra is still facing a big issue with high demand for their popular models like Thar, Scorpio N, and XUV700.
Even though they’re producing many cars, people still have to wait a long time, up to 15-16 months, for the Thar, especially the 4×2 versions.
As reported by Autocar India, this situation hasn’t improved since August 2023. Mahindra had an order backlog of over 2.8 lakh SUVs, of which 68,000 bookings comprised the Thar with an average of 10,000 new bookings each month.
If you’re looking to buy the Thar with a diesel engine and 4×2 (rear-wheel drive), you might have to wait a long time – around 15-16 months – for the specific versions it comes in. The Thar 4×2 comes with a 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 118 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
However, it doesn’t have an automatic transmission, only a 6-speed manual one. On the other hand, the petrol version, which has a 2.0-litre mStallion engine, produces 152 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. This one exclusively has a 6-speed automatic transmission.
For the petrol engine and 4×2, the wait is shorter, about five months on average, but it has increased slightly in recent months. The Thar 4×2 is priced between Rs 10.98 lakh and Rs 13.77 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom), which is more affordable compared to the 4×4 models. The reason for this lower price is that 4×2 falls into a lower tax category for sub-4m vehicles, making it more in demand.
On the other hand, the 4×4 versions of the Thar have an average waiting period of 5-6 months for all options, including petrol, diesel, hardtop, and soft-top variants. This waiting time has increased by about two months compared to before.
The Thar 4×4 gives you two engine choices: the 2.0-litre petrol mStallion and a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 132 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. Unlike the 2WD versions, the 4×4 Thars offer both manual and automatic transmissions. Additionally, the Thar 4×4 comes with a manual-shift 4×4 transfer case, and some models even have a manual-locking differential.
As for the prices, the Thar 4×4 models are currently available between Rs 14.04 lakh to Rs 16.27 lakh for the petrol options, while the diesel versions are priced from Rs 14.60 lakh to Rs 16.94 lakh. These prices are ex-showroom in Delhi.
