A woman who was a resident of east London was killed by her two pet XL bully dogs earlier this month. The woman, who was in 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman lived in Cornwall Close, Hornchurch and her dogs were registered. The canines were safely seized after being contained inside a room, local authorities said while speaking to the Guardian.
Today's death of a woman in her 50s in Romford will be the 16th person to have been killed by an XL Bully or XL Bully cross in the UK since November 2021.Since we launched our campaign in July 2023, out of the 5 subsequent fatalities to dogs, 4 were caused by XL Bullies. https://t.co/Ha3J3zxn9a pic.twitter.com/flMRjXKTpR

Armed police officers had to enter the home of the woman to attend to the emergency. “Police were called to Cornwall Close around 1.12pm … to reports of a woman attacked by a dog. The woman was treated by medics from London ambulance service, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the threat posed, armed officers attended. After assessing the situation, officers were able to safely seize two dogs,” a spokesperson for the London Metropolitan police said.

“These were registered XL bully dogs and prior to officers’ arrival had been contained inside a room in the house. They did not leave the house at any time during the incident. The family of the woman, who was the owner of the dogs, are being supported by officers,” the statement said.
The UK government made it a criminal offence to own the XL bully breed in England and Wales without an exemption certificate since February. If anyone owned the breed then they were instructed to have the animal neutered, microchipped and muzzled and on a lead in public, and imposed other restrictions.
The outcry against the breed rose last year when a footage of an XL bully dog attacking people on a road in Birmingham went viral. The girl sustained shoulder and arm injuries. A man named Ian Price, 52, died after being attacked by two dogs in Stonnall, West Midlands, in the same month. The police said that they believed that the animals were XL bully dogs.
In 2021, a 10-year-old child was mauled to death by a seven-stone XL bully dog called Beast. Its owner was sentenced to three years in jail.
