Washington: The deeply conservative Alabama threw up a surprise as Democrat Doug Jones won the bitter fight for a US Senate seat against Republican candidate Roy Moore. Jones is the first of the liberal to win a Senate seat from Alabama in 25 years.
The result deals a huge political blow to President Donald Trump, who actively took part in the senate race marred by accusations of sexual misconduct against Moore.
The Republican candidate has been in the eye-of-the-storm after several women accused him of pursuing them in their teens while he was in his 30's.
The Democratic victory will reduce the Republican majority in the Senate to 51-49 once Jones takes his seat on Capitol Hill, thus reducing the margin for the conservatives to push through major bills, especially their flagship corporate tax cut.
Twitter was abuzz with reactions after Jones' victory with many leaders hailing the people of Alabama, while others congratulated the liberal candidate:
“On a very personal level, I want to thank each of you for fulfilling a lifelong dream to serve in the U.S Senate. We have work to do in this state. Thank you all, god bless you.”Doug Jones, election night victory.#RightSideOfHistory pic.twitter.com/mpgFGAqofg— Doug Jones (@GDouglasJones) December 13, 2017
Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 13, 2017
Tonight, Alabama voters elected a senator who'll make them proud. And if Democrats can win in Alabama, we can -- and must -- compete everywhere.Onward!— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) December 13, 2017
Doug Jones. Thank you, Alabama. You’ve elected a man of incredible integrity, grit, and character. A fighter for working class and middle class Alabamians. He is going to make you proud in the Senate.— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) December 13, 2017
Congratulations, Doug Jones. You were a great US Attorney, and you ran a terrific campaign. You deserve this win. It’s a win for the people of Alabama.— Bill Clinton (@BillClinton) December 13, 2017
Love and decency prevails. Thank you Alabama! The black folks of Alabama saved the day. They should seriously get priority space at the table. pic.twitter.com/5vxMfJEQgY— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) December 13, 2017
Common sense and decency have prevailed in Alabama. It was a vote not just against sexual abuse but also against racism and against those who would ride roughshod over our democratic institutions.— Robert Reich (@RBReich) December 13, 2017

I call on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to listen to the people of Alabama and seat @GDouglasJones without any delay.— Elizabeth Warren (@elizabethforma) December 13, 2017
Congratulations to @GDouglasJones for winning the Senate seat from Alabama. He's known for having prosecuted the KKK (American version of RSS) - notorious for violence, including lynchings, against Blacks. Alabama has had a history of lynching & racism, and of resistance to it ✌— Shehla Rashid (@Shehla_Rashid) December 13, 2017
