On Cam: American Airlines Flight Escapes Disaster In Tampa After Landing-Gear Tire Blows Out
A blown landing-gear tire delayed American Airlines Flight 590 from Tampa to Phoenix. No injuries reported; passengers transferred to replacement flight

A sudden burst of landing-gear tire caused a delay for American Airlines passengers heading from the US city of Tampa to Phoenix Wednesday morning.

Emergency responders in Texas state were dispatched to American Airlines Flight 590 shortly before 8 am (local time), Tampa International Airport spokesman C.J. Johnson said.

A video posted on social media shows the US plane taxiing on the runway when its right-rear tire begins to smoke and then collapse. The plane eventually came to a stop at the end of the runway, and emergency vehicles arrived minutes later.

174 passengers and 6 crew members

A total of 174 passengers and six crew members were taken from the plane and bussed to the terminal, American Airlines spokesman Alfredo Garduño said. No injuries were reported.

Passengers from the plane were moved to a replacement flight. Other flight operations at Tampa International Airport weren’t affected, Johnson said. Viral video footage from the incident showed the plane taxiing on the runway with its right tire smoking and on fire.

In the video, the Tampa airport runway appeared to show the plane’s tires sparking as tire fragments were left on the runway.”A blown tire,” plane spotter Capt. Steven Markovich yells in the video. “Emergency! Emergency! Emergency! They’re on fire!” “There is going to be stuff all over the runway,” he adds. “Holy crap, I think they’re on fire!”
