Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Extreme Hobbies Pose Risks, Tech Giant Warns Investors
Meta discloses in its filing to the SEC that CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s engagement in high-risk activities like hydrofoiling and combat sports could threaten their operations during an adverse event.

Tech behemoth Meta warned investors in its latest Securities and Exchange Commission filing that chief executive officer and founder Mark Zuckerberg’s love of “high-risk activities” pose a “risk of serious injury and death”. This is the first time Meta has given such a warning to investors under the section “risk factors” in Meta’s 10-K filing.

The 10-K filing is a comprehensive report on Meta’s activities throughout 2023. It should be noted that Zuckerberg enjoys dangerous hobbies that include hydrofoiling and mixed martial arts.

Hydrofoiling in water sports involves using a specialized board or boat with a hydrofoil underneath. The hydrofoil lifts the equipment above the water as it moves, reducing drag and allowing for faster and smoother rides. Zuckerberg’s passion for hand-to-hand combat led him to tear his anterior cruciate ligament while training in November 2023.

The Meta CEO also picked up Brazilian jiu-jitsu during the pandemic and has won gold and silver medals at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament in May 2023. It was also reported that he is trying to get a pilot’s licence. The father-of-three obtained his student pilot certificate last year, US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) records showed.

The latest SEC filing appeared to suggest that Zuckerberg finished the course to become a certified pilot. The recent filing listed his dangerous pastimes as “combat sports, extreme sports and recreational aviation”.

The filing warned investors that if something unfortunate were to happen to Zuckerberg while indulging in these activities “there could be a material adverse impact on our [Meta’s] operations”.

“We currently depend on the continued services and performance of our key personnel, including Mark Zuckerberg,” the filing says. Meta’s 2022 10-K filing did not contain any such warning and such warnings are not something that is usually included.

It’s unclear why the Menlo Park, California-based firm decided to add the warning to its latest 10-K filing.
