Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has filed a civil lawsuit in a US federal district court against the Indian government and several high-ranking officials, alleging an assassination attempt against him last year.
The lawsuit seeks damages, claiming that Pannun evaded an attack arranged by the Indian government. Pannun, who holds dual citizenship in the US and Canada and is designated a terrorist by India, alleges that he was targeted for speaking in favour of an independent Sikh state.
He claims that the assassination plot was approved by senior Indian officials and involved an attempt on his life on US soil. The lawsuit names National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief Samant Goel, and senior R&AW officer Vikram Yadav. It alleges that Yadav was tasked with coordinating the murder attempt, which was reportedly thwarted when the hitmen turned out to be undercover US agents.
‘Baseless and false’
Top Indian government sources told CNN-News18 that the allegations are “baseless and false.” They suggest that Pannun’s lawsuit is a strategic move aimed at undermining India’s reputation on the international stage ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US.
According to the sources, Pannun is portrayed as an immigration lawyer exploiting the situation to attract clients seeking refugee status by framing himself as a victim of alleged atrocities. The sources further inform that Pannun is linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and is supported by US agencies that oppose India.
“This (case) is just before the Prime Minister visits the US. It is aimed at creating embarrassment for India. Pannun is an immigration lawyer looking to attract clients from India who seek refugee status under the guise of alleged atrocities, which he facilitates. He is an ISI plant and is supported by US agencies against India. All allegations are baseless and false,” sources said.
