A group of Airbnb visitors in North Carolina, US, mined cryptocurrency valued at over $100,000 (about Rs 84 lakh) during their three-week stay. But the Airbnb owner was stuck with a $1,500 (about Rs 1.25 lakh) electrical bill. Now, Ashley Class has decided to implement a special rule for subsequent rentals: mining cryptocurrency is not permitted on the property. Class, in a video released on TikTok, said that she has prohibited cryptocurrency mining in her short-term rentals following a peculiar guest encounter. After watching the video from her outdoor camera again, Class discovered that the visitors had brought in at least ten computer rigs, which are used for cryptocurrency mining.
Class stated in her video that “it was cheaper for them to rent a house than to pay for that electricity.”
In the video, Class also revealed that she contacted the visitors to let them know she was planning on charging them for the enormous electricity bill. The visitors reportedly battled her until she involved Airbnb and published footage of the event, according to remarks she made on the TikTok video. The visitors reportedly paid the bill at last.
In cryptocurrency mining, individuals must work out challenging mathematical puzzles in order to acquire shares in the digital currency. Supercomputers, which consume a tonne of power, are used by “miners” to find speedy solutions to these issues.
