The celebrations for Ganesh Chaturthi are in full swing. This Hindu holiday commemorates the deity Ganesha’s birthday and is observed with tremendous fanfare and merriment, especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. Social media is flooded with videos, including an old video going viral again. It depicts the festivities around Ganesh Chaturthi at the Sree Ganesh temple in Entebbe, Uganda.
The video is from 2017. But some users uploaded it thinking it was recorded at the recent Entebbe celebrations. Bollywood actor Anupam Kher posted the same video on his X account in September 2018.
This is MAGICAL !!!! Shree Ganesh Temple in Entebbe, Uganda celebrates #GaneshUtsav with the chants of #GanpatiBappaMorya. Following Kher’s social media posts, many sites falsely claimed that the actor was in Uganda.
However, the boom fact-checking group contacted Rahul C. Mushrif, the chairman of the Shree Ganesh temple in Entebbe. Rahul verified that the video was filmed during the 2017 festival.
He also confirmed that Kher was not part of the event in Uganda.
Since the video has been re-posted online, it depicts Entebbe people pounding drums in harmony while the chant “Ganpati bappa morya” reverberates around the scene. On social media, the video has received over 2 lakh views.

The ten-day celebration commemorates Lord Ganesha’s birth anniversary as the god of knowledge, prosperity, and good fortune.
After a spectacular street parade, worshippers submerge the statue of Lord Ganesh in a body of water on the tenth day. Every year, the celebration takes place in the month of Bhadrapada during Shukla Paksha.
