In recent years, TikTok has become a hub for various social media trends, with many focusing on putting relationships to the test. The latest trend getting attention is the ketchup challenge, where women are challenging their partners to clean up spilled ketchup on a kitchen counter or table. The challenge involves women observing how their significant others react and attempt to clean up the mess. The videos showcase a range of reactions from their partners. Some opt for cleaning methods, including their hands, wet paper towels, dry towels or cleaning sprays. However, others take a less conventional approach, creating a messier situation by wiping the ketchup incorrectly.
Cleaning up spilled ketchup requires experience and common sense, as there’s a risk of spreading it around. The ketchup challenge, originally inspired by hot sauce, gained popularity after a TikToker named Katherine Castaneda shared a video of her partner attempting to clean the counter. The video went viral as her partner’s efforts involved using numerous paper towels and leaving the top with a slight orange tint. The challenge has since become a humorous way for couples to test each other’s cleaning skills.
Reacting to the challenge, a user wrote, “It’s to check if you fold the paper towels, I think? Like to see if you waste paper towels or reuse the same one until you can’t anymore? If it’s actually to check if men know how to clean I would absolutely fail this LMAO."
Another jokingly suggested, “The best way to clean up this mess is to show the girl the door and tell her to have a nice life."
An account remarked, “And the test is what exactly, checking to see that your man doesn’t check you on your BS. Dudes, focus brothers, stop simping."
Meanwhile, Rebecca Coopersmith, a licensed clinical social worker and certified sexuality educator at the Family Institute at Northwestern University, told TODAY, “What I dislike most about this challenge is that it does put one person in a one-up position instead of in a partnership. For me, it’s just a way to engender resentment. Truthfully, if we want our partners’ help, we need to accept that they might do things differently than we would have and that needs to be OK."
As per the portal, many TikTok users express the belief that the challenge is just for fun and should not be taken too seriously.
