Basic etiquette could help a person in any type of situation, especially when you are appearing for a job interview. However, a case on social media is making headlines where a man faced instant rejection after failing to behave with a receptionist.
Treating others well does not cost anyone anything. A job candidate learned it the hard way and unsurprisingly, he was the only one at fault. As per a report by the Mirror, his potential boss took to the social media site Reddit to share what he did and advised the readers to stay cautious. She asked the readers to treat everyone with respect, writing on the Life Pro Tips Reddit forum. She stated, “Today, a candidate blew his interview in the first 5 minutes after he entered the building.”
According to her, the candidate behaved dismissively towards the receptionist. She greeted and tried to converse with him but he barely held any eye contact with her. She wrote further, “What the candidate did not realise was that the receptionist was the hiring manager.”
The candidate was then called back to the conference room, where the hiring manager explained to him that everyone on the team was valuable and respect-worthy. This one interaction was enough to seal the candidate’s fate; he was respectfully rejected. The Reddit poster wrote, “Thank you for your time but the interview is over. Be nice to everyone in the building.”
The users agreed with the fact that one must always remain respectful to others and lauded the hiring for ensuring that. A user wrote, “BINGO! After a candidate leaves one of the first things those involved in the interview will do is speak to the receptionist and ask them how the interviewee treated them.” While another wrote, “I got hired once because I held the door for the janitor coming in with his cart.” According to reports, they inquired more about the candidate and found that he was not a well-mannered person.
