Elephants look adorable when you see them from far but they can also be dangerous. Clips of elephants demonstrating their terrifying side, such as chasing tourist vehicles in the jungle or scaring away predators, are frequently shared on social media sites. Recently, a video of the elephant lifting their safari car and terrifying the passengers before crashing it on the ground went viral. The incident took place at the Rathlogo Bird Hide in South Africa’s Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Eldine Arendse, one of the visitors in the vehicle, recalled the horrific encounter and shared footage of the occurrence with Latest Sightings, which they later broadcast on their YouTube channel. Bongani Yende, the safari guide, acted bravely to save visitors and himself from a potentially fatal encounter with an enraged elephant. As the tourists walked around in the parking area, when Bongani noticed a massive elephant approaching and recognised the indications of musth, a period of increased hostility in male elephants.
Bongani Yende quickly got four tourists into the vehicle, while the rest stayed hidden in the parking area. With little time to spare, the guide decided to approach the elephant and protect the tourists. Despite starting the engine and driving towards the elephant in an attempt to scare it away, the animal would not move.
The elephant eventually confronted the vehicle front on and used its tusks to effortlessly raise the vehicle off the ground, with the front wheels reaching the height of its head. The tourists who were hidden watched in horror as the vehicle was lifted into the air and yelled scared for their lives. After releasing the jeep, the elephant eventually walked on, leaving the guide and visitors frightened but unharmed.
Netizens were shocked to see the violent encounter. A user stated, “Elephants are some of the most majestic and terrifying creatures on earth. They can be extremely sweet but also cause massive damage when pissed off." While another expressed, “Elephants are incredibly strong. This video will go viral no doubt." Some commended the guide for taking responsibility. “The driver has taken responsibility. Communication skills under life threatening circumstances. Commendable commitment," said a user. Many adventure enthusiasts were fascinated to see the clip and commented, “One of the best videos of an elephant attacking a car in the first person! Elephant strength and power."
