Sony India today introduced Alpha 9 (model ILCE-9), its new digital camera and claims it to be the most technologically advanced, innovative digital camera that it has ever created. The new camera offers capabilities like blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 20fps, 60 AF/AE tracking calculations per second, a maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32,000 second and more. It comes with a 35mm full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor – which enables data speed processing at up to 20x faster than previous Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. This sensor is paired with an upgraded BIONZ X processing engine and front-end LSI that aims to maximise its overall performance.
The Alpha 9 comes stacked with 24.2-megapixel Exmor RS image sensor, new BIONZ X processor and front end LSI. It also houses new components which allow faster AF/AE calculation while also reducing EVF display latency. The processor and front end LSI are responsible for the larger continuous shooting buffer, therefore, allowing photographers to shoot at a 20 fps with continuous AF/AE tracking for up to 362 JPEG or 241 RAW images.
The Fast Hybrid AF system – achieves approximately 25 percent faster performance when compared with α7R II.
The electronic shutter in the Alpha 9 operates silently and is vibration-free and thus achieves a maximum 1/32000 sec speed as per Sony. The Alpha 9 is equipped with a 5-axis image stabilisation system that provides a shutter speed advantage of 5.0 steps. With a half press of the shutter button, the effect of the image stabilisation can be monitored in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.
Alpha 9 offers an Ethernet port (wired LAN terminal), that allows the user to transfer files to a specified FTP server. The camera is powered by an all-new Sony battery (model NP-FZ100) with 2.2x the capacity of previous Sony full-frame models. Based on customer feedback, the new camera offers two separate media card slots, including one for UHS-II media. The same data can simultaneously be recorded to both cards, or the user can choose to separate RAW / JPEG or still images / movies. Movies can also simultaneously be recorded to two cards for backup and more efficient data management.
The all-new Sony camera supports 4K (3840x2160p) video recording. The camera collects 6K of information, oversampling it to produce 4K footage. The 35mm size recording is also available in the Alpha 9. Additionally, the camera can record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbps, which allows footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.
Other features
The Alpha 9 features an all-new Quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 3,686k dots. The new optical designed Tru-Finder is the highest resolution viewfinder ever incorporated by Sony in α camera. The fluorine coating on the outer lens repels dirt and the EVF incorporated in the finder utilises a ZEISS T* Coating to reduce reflections. This all adds up to a 2x higher luminance than the XGA OLED Tru-Finder from the α7R II.
The standard ISO range is ISO 100~51200, expandable to ISO 50~204800 with minimum noise. Additionally, the new Alpha 9 also supports uncompressed 14-bit RAW.
The Sony Alpha 9 Camera will be available from July 29 and will be priced at Rs 3,29,990.
