Reports about a foldable iPhone have been doing the rounds in our news feeds lately. Now, known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple could be planning for a 2023 launch for the foldable iPhone. In another research note, Kuo has said that the Cupertino-based giant has no plans to adopt USB type-C on future iPhones or integrate a touch ID sensor into the power button.
In his research note about the foldable iPhone, Kuo said that the smartphone, which will probably see a 2023 release, will come with a screen between 7.5-inches to 8-inches in size. This is contrary to previous reports that have hinted that the screen on the foldable iPhone will be closer to the size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. While many reports have said that Apple has begun development on the foldable iPhone, Kuo has been quoted in the research note as saying that the product has ?not yet officially kicked off.?
According to Kuo, the display on the foldable iPhone will be closer to the size of the iPad Mini when folded out. Going by this, it seems that Apple is taking a similar approach as Samsung took for the Galaxy Fold, having a regular-sized phone that folds out into a small tablet-like form factor, instead of the clamshell-like design like the Moto Razr or the Galaxy Z Flip.
Separately, Kuo has also said that Apple has no plans to adopt USB type-C ports on future iPhone devices or integrate a Touch ID sensor into the power button. This research note, obtained by Apple Insider, says that the reason behind Apple?s decision is that the company believes that USB type-C is detrimental to the MFi business?s profitability, and tis waterproof specification is lower than Lightning and MagSafe.
Kuo, in his report, also mentioned that instead of switching to a USB type-C port, Apple may jump straight to the much-rumoured portless iPhone that relies solely on wireless charging. Going ahead, Kuo indicates that Apple will invest heavily in MagSafe, as it is more waterproof that USB lightning and Apple controls MagSafe standard via its MFi program, ensuring it will be able to continue making profit from the licensing fee. Kuo still predicts that despite MagSafe being the way ahead for Apple, it will continue to use its Lightning port for the foreseeable future.
